It may really be that good!
Welcome to the introduction of our first in a monthly feature we’re calling, Product Buzz. Each month we’ll be exploring one of my top picks — a specific product or tool, all the juicy details, perks and even promotions you can tap into AND, bottom line…how it can boost your practice with a rise in productivity and continue to raise the bar on the level of service you provide every day.
Before we jump in with this month’s Buzz I would like to begin by sharing a story. This is important because it will highlight what many of us dental professionals find ourselves doing from time to time when it comes to a new product, a new program or system — delay due to skepticism. If you don’t recognize yourself in my story, I’m certain you’ll be able to recognize a colleague or two.
A year ago, while attending an annual trade show here in California, I met a gentleman in one of the booths. He was representing a company and told me all about their promotional product launch being featured at this show. He wasn’t pushy or aggressive. In fact, he was very gracious. He asked me a lot of questions and was interested in sharing this new product with me to get my feedback. I took the time to check it out and asked some questions of my own. I didn’t buy that day. As much as I appreciated his approach and understood the value of the product, I honestly didn’t have the heart to tell him I didn’t believe what he was telling me. Frankly, it sounded too good to be true! However, he was wise to take a chance on me. He asked me to take another one of his products home. He was offering an opportunity to try something with no strings attached. So, I took it. As it goes with most shows, I get caught up networking with colleagues, visiting a myriad of booths, time flies and once I leave, I jump back into work. So, this show was no different. I didn’t take the time to give it much attention and his product stayed in my bag for months. When I finally got around to sifting through it, I discovered that product at the bottom of my bag. I brought it into the office, sterilized it and included it in one of my set-ups. As it rotated around and showed up on my tray I remembered our conversation and got excited to use it. I couldn’t believe it — I absolutely LOVED it! I separated it and got it into the sterilization cycle right away. I did that every day until I realized, I need to get one of these for each set up. I got even more intrigued by the possibility of what Lewis had shared with me about his other products. I was so excited to learn more about how these products could open the door to something new for me in hygiene. I felt like I had discovered a love of hygiene instruments all over again (clearly, an indication of my obsession with hygiene). And, I got how my skepticism held me back from discovering something really great.
Needless to say, I got in touch with Lewis immediately. I ordered his launch product from that show and…the rest is history. I am completely converted. See, I was exposed to only one instrument company when I was in hygiene school. It is what I learned with, learned to love and worked with for nearly two decades. I thought that was IT in the world of hygiene instruments. And, what Lewis had shared with me was truly out of the box thinking for me. In fact, it seemed to contradict everything I had believed was possible with instruments. Until, of course, I used it myself. Now, I can’t believe I practiced this long without these instruments and I cannot ever imagine practicing with anything else.
So…what is it?!?
American Eagle’s Posterior Double Gracey XP
YES!!! Double Gracey. The Double Gracey design combines the best features of Gracey AND Universal Curettes. Double Graceys have rounded toes and TWO cutting edges. Advantages of using Double Graceys include easy adaptation to mesial AND distal surfaces, as well as buccal and lingual surfaces, without switching or repositioning the instrument — a serious time saver. All Double Graceys are sharpen-free with American Eagle Instruments’ patented XP Technology. I know…crazy, isn’t it?!? This instrument has easily replaced my previous Gracey 11-12, 13-14, 15-16 and all my Posterior Universal Curettes. For me, that is ONE instrument replacing five instruments. AND, sharpen-free!
What is XP Technology?
XP Technology is American Eagle’s patented process that bonds a super-hard alloy to a stainless steel substrate, making the surface much more durable and wear-resistant. An incredible Rockwell scale hardness of 89 allows American Eagle to produce a thinner instrument blade and sharper edges. The XP Technology instruments are the only sharpen-free instruments on the market today.
So, what does all this mean for you (your hygienist)?!?
- Thinner blade = enhances adaptability, safe and comfortable access for subgingival scaling
- Light, ergonomic design = increases hand protection and produces less fatigue
- Sharpen free = saves time, money and extends the life of the instruments
- Satisfaction Guarantee = risk free
American Eagle doesn’t just have a Posterior Double Gracey XP…they offer a Mini Posterior to complement it as well as an Anterior Double Gracey XP and Mini Anterior. This is a set of four superior instruments that replace at least twelve instruments. The Double Gracey XP set really is the next generation in instrumentation. I cannot tell you what a lifesaver these instruments have been for me in my practice. These are my one and only go-to SRP set-ups that are the most efficient and by far the absolute best instruments I have ever used. I breeze through my scaling and root planing — saving my hand and giving my patients the most efficient and pleasant experience of non-surgical periodontal therapy. And, my patient’s NEVER have to hear me sharpen instruments again.
The excitement doesn’t end there. American Eagle offers quarterly promotions and an XP Rewards Program. The XP Rewards is FREE and offers year-round savings with instrument exchange and free instruments with purchase.* The XP Rewards Program is just one more way to take advantage of huge savings.

In case you couldn’t tell, I’m passionate about hygiene instruments. I am because it is an area where I spend careful time and attention coaching hygienists. Without the right instruments, a hygienist can find herself frustrated, inefficient and non-productive. Instrumentation is a critical component in the making of an extraordinary hygiene department. I see a skilled hygienist only as good as the instruments she holds between her fingers. These American Eagle instruments can be a game changer for your hygienist and elevate the productivity and efficiency of every hygiene appointment…leading to an enhanced patient experience every time.
As always, I would love to hear from you. What instruments have made an impression on you and your hygiene team? And, what products or product topics would you like to learn more about, get or give some feedback around or would like some coaching with your team?
